FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about loft stilts, raised loft flooring and boarding your loft the right way.

What are loft stilts and how do they work?

Loft stilts (also called loft risers or loft legs) are strong supports that screw onto your ceiling joists and lift your loft boards above the insulation. This lets you board your loft for storage without squashing the insulation, so it keeps its full thermal performance.

Why shouldn't I board directly on top of my joists?

UK guidance recommends around 270mm of loft insulation, but most ceiling joists are only 100mm deep. Boarding directly on the joists compresses the insulation to roughly a third of its depth, which can cut its effectiveness by up to 50% and increase your heating bills.

How many loft stilts do I need?

Space stilts at 400–600mm centres along your joists. As a rule of thumb, allow one stilt per 0.3m² of boarded floor – so a 12-stilt LoftRise kit covers roughly 3–4m². Send us your loft dimensions and we'll calculate it for you.

How much weight can LoftRise loft stilts hold?

Each LoftRise stilt supports 250kg+ when the load is evenly distributed across the platform. For household storage – boxes, suitcases, decorations – a correctly installed platform is far stronger than you'll ever need. The practical limit is usually your ceiling joists, so spread heavy items out.

Can I install loft stilts myself?

Yes – LoftRise stilts are designed for DIY installation. You only need a drill/screwdriver, a tape measure and a spirit level. A typical storage platform goes down in an afternoon. See our step-by-step installation guide for full details.

Do loft stilts help with condensation?

Yes. Because the boards sit above the insulation, an air gap is maintained between the two. This allows moisture to escape and air to circulate, reducing the risk of condensation and damp forming under your boarded floor.

Do LoftRise stilts work with 270mm insulation?

Yes – the system is designed around the recommended 270mm+ mineral wool depth used in UK homes, keeping your boards clear of the insulation so it stays fully effective.

Do you deliver outside the UK?

Yes. We supply homeowners, installers and retailers across the United Kingdom and mainland Europe. Contact us by email or WhatsApp for delivery options and lead times to your country.

Do I need planning permission or building regulations approval?

For simple raised storage boarding in a typical house loft, no planning permission is needed. If you plan to convert the loft into a habitable room, that's a loft conversion and different rules apply – our stilts are designed for storage platforms.

How do I get a price or place an order?
